What is Barbounia? Striped red mullet, called barbounia in Greek, is one of the two species of red mullet (the other one being koutsomoura or plain red mullet) that belong to the goatfish family and are found in the Eastern Atlantic including the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea. A demersal fish that inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms, barbounia has a reddish body with pale pink flesh and can reach a length of up to 45 cm and weigh up to two kilograms, but more commonly it is about 25 cm long and weighs about a quarter of a kilogram
