Photo of 1930 s vintage bamboo saltwater fishing rod and reel. Before fiberglass and composite materials fishing rods were hand made from strips of bamboo. The fishing rod was owned by my grandfather which he used in the 1930 s. My father and I restrung the rod, put on new guides then applied varnish. I used the outfit a number of years ago to catch sea bass on a head boat off the coast of ocean city maryland. This outfit is no longer used since it is fragile and newer tackle is better with better performance it but it still works. Here it is displayed with some rusty fishing lures, a bank sinker and a few hooks-this is typical tackle for saltwater fishing in the mid-atlantic.
